How Tapping Helps with Stress & Overwhelm

Stress and overwhelm can make it feel like your mind is spinning and your body is stuck in high gear. You might feel frazzled, scattered, or like you’re barely keeping your head above water. Tapping offers a way to pause, reset, and reclaim a sense of calm.

By gently tapping on specific acupressure points while acknowledging what’s weighing on you, you give yourself a chance to slow down, release tension, and regain clarity. It’s not about eliminating stress completely, it’s about finding a way to meet it with more ease.

Why can tapping help?

Most stress advice focuses on managing your thoughts or environment—deep breathing, time management, or positive affirmations. But sometimes, your body is still stuck in a state of high alert, even when you logically know you’re safe.

Tapping brings the body into the process. The combination of gentle tapping, focused attention, and acknowledging what’s stressing you may help calm your nervous system’s stress response. Research suggests that EFT can influence areas involved in stress, including cortisol levels and the amygdala, helping you shift from feeling overwhelmed to feeling more grounded.

Think of it like hitting the pause button on a chaotic day. Tapping doesn’t try to tell you to “just relax.” It gives you a way to gently turn down the noise and notice what shifts.

What does the research say?

There is now a growing body of research into EFT and stress. Studies have shown that tapping can:

  • Reduce cortisol levels, helping your body transition out of “fight or flight” mode.
  • Lower anxiety and stress symptoms in as little as one session.
  • Improve emotional resilience, making it easier to handle life’s challenges.

While we don’t claim tapping is a magic cure, there’s enough evidence to take it seriously, and to keep exploring how it can help you navigate stress with more ease.

Ready to try it for yourself?

You don’t need to know exactly what you’re doing, and you don’t need to feel completely calm before you begin. I’ve put together a short guided tapping session for stress and overwhelm. Just find somewhere comfortable, press play, and follow along with me.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Simply tap along, notice what you’re feeling, and see what shifts for you.

What you might notice

Everyone responds differently, but some people notice things such as:

A sense of physical relaxation

Racing thoughts slowing down

Feeling less caught up in the overwhelm

Finding it easier to take a deep breath

Person in a yellow shirt sits on a couch, resting their head on their hand and looking peaceful while sunlight streams through a nearby window.

You don’t have to eliminate stress for tapping to be useful. Sometimes the first shift is simply feeling a little less overwhelmed by it all.

Tapping isn’t a replacement for therapy or medication when you need those things. But for the days when everything feels like too much, the moments when your to-do list is endless, or the times when you just need a break, it can be a simple tool to have with you.

And you can use it whenever you need it.

Frequently asked questions

1. I’ve been stressed for so long. Is tapping really going to help?

We can’t promise anything specific for you. But tapping has helped many people who’ve tried everything else first. It works with the body’s stress response directly, which is often what long-standing stress needs. The best way to find out is to try a free session and see how your nervous system responds.

2. Is this a replacement for therapy or medication?

No, tapping is a complementary tool to help you manage stress and overwhelm. If you’re dealing with chronic stress or other mental health concerns, we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional.

3. What if I don’t feel anything after tapping?

That’s okay! Sometimes the shifts are subtle but meaningful, like feeling slightly less overwhelmed or a little more grounded. Keep trying, and notice how you feel over time.

4. How often do I need to tap to see a difference?

Some people notice a difference after just one session, while others find that regular practice (e.g., daily tapping) helps the most. Consistency is key, but even occasional tapping can bring relief.

5. What if tapping feels weird or self-conscious?

That’s completely normal! Tapping might feel unusual at first, but most people find it easier with practice. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to do it, just tap along and see how it feels.

6. Can I use tapping for stress anytime?

Absolutely! Tapping is a great tool for those moments when stress feels overwhelming. Keep a short session (like our 7-minute stress tapping video) ready on your phone or device for whenever you need it.
